Chapter 6: Understanding Input

Understanding input for computer. Nowadays, I think that teenager and children also know how to input computer. For example, external hard disk, pen-drive, memory card , etc. But what really mean by input? Input is any data and instructions entered into the memory of a computer. Input device is any hardware component that allows users to enter data and instructions into a computer. There are many input device. A keyboard is an input device that contains keys users press to enter data and instructions into a computer. Keyboard, basically every desktop or laptop will have it to input data, to key in data. Keyboard have 2 option, which is using wire-USB another is using wireless or Bluetooth to connect computer. Most desktop computer keyboards have between 101 and 105 keys, a numeric keypad, Function keys, CTRL keys, ALT keys, and arrow keys, WINDOWS key, APPLICATION key and Toggle keys. An ergonomic keyboard has a design that reduces the chance of wrist and hand injuries. Ergonomics also incorporates comfort, efficiency, and safety into the design of the workplace.

Pointing device is an input device that allows a user to control a pointer on the screen. There are few pointing device which are mouse, trackball, touch pad, pointing stick and touch screen.

  1. Mouse- a pointing device that fits under the palm of your hand comfortably. Types of mouse are mechanical mouse and optical mouse. Can be wired or wireless.
  2. Trackball- a stationary pointing device with a ball on its top or side.
  3. Touch pad- a small, flat, rectangular pointing device that is sensitive to pressure and motion. Mostly used in laptop or notebook.
  4. Pointing Stick- a pressure sensitive pointing device shaped like a pencil eraser that is positioned between keys on a keyboard. Mostly used in laptop or notebook.
  5. Touch screen- a touch sensitive display device. Found in all modern smartphones, tablets, or public machines such as ATM.

Pen input- a pen like device used on screen to write, draw or make selections. Some primary school in Malaysia is using it to teach. It has two form which is stylus and digital pen.

Gaming part haha. Video games and computer games use a game controller as the input device that directs movements and actions of on screen objects. This will be familar with gamer. This allow us to play game with more passion. The type:

  1. Gamepads
  2. Joysticks and Wheels
  3. Light guns
  4. Dance pads
  5. Motion-sensing controllers

A digital camera is a mobile device that allows users to take pictures and store them digitally. Nowadays, digital camera we can see anyway. People use to take photo with digital camera and smart phone. There has many skill to take a good photo. The two major factors will affect the quality of digital camera photos is
  1. Resolution. Resolution is the number of horizontal and vertical pixels in a display device. A pixel is the smallest element in an electronic display.
  2. Number of bits stored in each pixel. Each pixel consists of one or more bits of data. The more bits used to represent a pixel, the more colors and shades of gray that can be represented.
Voice Input is the process of entering input by speaking into a microphone. Voice recognition is the computer's capability of distinguishing spoken words. When using skype, we using voice input to talk with our family and friend.
Audio input is the process of entering any sound into the computer
  • Speech
  • Music
  • Sound Effects
Video Input is the process of capturing full-motion images and storing on a computer's storage medium. We record video on a digital video (DV) camera or use a video capture card to convert analogs to digital. Then connect the camera to a port on the system unit and start transfer video and images. We can save the video on our computer. A Web cam is a type of digital video camera that enables a user to:
  • Capture video and still images
  • Sends e-mail messages with video attachments
  • Add live images to instant messages
  • Broadcast live images over the internet
  • Make video telephone calls
A video conference is a meeting between two or more geographically separated people. Some university is using online video to teach student. Lecturer and student is located on their home and when reach lecture time, they just need to turn on computer connect to the website and they can have their lecture.

Scanners and Reading Devices
  1. Flatbed, a scanner that provides a flat, glass surface to hold objects for scanning.
  2. Pen or Handheld, a scanner that is moved by hand over the material being captured.
  3. Sheet-fed, specifically designed for scanning loose sheets of paper.
  4. Drum, a type of scanner used to capture highest resolution from an image.
  5. Bar Code Reader, uses laser beams to read bar codes.
  6. Optical character recognition (OCR) involves reading characters from ordinary documents.
  7. A turnaround document is a document you return to the company the creates and sends it.
  8. Optical mark recognition (OMR) reads hand-drawn marks such as small circles or rectangles. An OMR device scans the documents and matches patterns of light.
  9. RFID (radio frequency identification) uses radio signals to communicate with a tag placed in or attached to an object. An RFID reader reads information on the tag via radio waves. For example, tag that use to enter and exit library at Block A.
  10. Magnetic stripe card readers read the magnetic stripe on the back of cards such as:
    1. Credit Cards
    2. Entertainment cards
    3. Bank cards
    4. Other similar cards
MICR (magnetic ink character recognition) device read text printed with magnetized ink. An MICR reader converts MICR character into a form the computer can process. Banking industry uses MICR for check processing. Data collection devices obtain data directly at the location where the transaction or event takes place.

Biometric Input is a device which identify a person data with personal characteristic. Biometric authenticates a person's identity by verifying a personal characteristic which are
  1. Fingerprint reader
  2. Face recognition system
  3. Hand geometry system
  4. Voice verification system
  5. Signature verification system
  6. Iris recognition system
  7. Retinal scanner
In normal place, usually will be finger print only unless the place is high secure.

A terminal is a computer that allows users to send data to and/or receive information from a host computer.
  • A POS terminal records purchases, processes payment, and update inventory.
  • An automated teller machine (ATM) allows users to access their bank accounts.
  • A DVD kiosk is a self-service DVD rental machine.
